about

This chant has one of the more interesting tales about it's creation. Following the death of our first dog, whom we had named Shiva, in September, 2005, we took a trip to Antigua to 'shift the energy.' A fellow at the resort saw that I had brought a guitar and asked to get together and 'jam' which I agreed. It turned out that his idea of jamming was for me to play chords and him solo nonstop for a couple hours (which I was actually totally fine with). He asked me to play a specific chord progression which was commonly used in the island's native calypso music - G-D-E-C - which I played continuously for our 'session.'

That night, I grabbed my guitar again, and started playing that chord progression because it was totally stuck in my head. I had already written a chant (Shiva Shiva Mahadeva Shiva) in honor of our deceased pooch the day he died, but that one still felt somewhat melancholy to me so I wanted to create something with a more celebratory feel, and this chord progression seemed perfect for that. This chant was born that night and we chanted it at our first evening of kirtan after our return to Sedona.
